CouchSurfing

Couch surfing is an online community, where strangers interact.  The goal is travel, openness and learning about other cultures.  These characteristics makes this a perfect platform for meaningful and authentic language activities.

The following tasks are centred around online communication, and has the main objective of eventually meeting locals.  This is perfect in a setting where the learners are living in a foreign country amongst the target language (in this case, France).

These activities use two corpus’ to help students understand the different genres of writing; how to write for different audiences, and what tone they need to use.  The first corpus was collected from public profiles, and the second is a collection of my own personal exchanges.  These tasks have their linguistic, pragmatic and cultural goals, but will also give the foreign students a opportunity to integrate more into the society by actually meeting locals.
